Magic: The Gathering - Custom Game Type Variants

This page is dedicated to my home-made Magic: The Gathering game type variants. These new game type variants assume you are familar with the Magic: The Gathering comprehensive rules. These game type variant rules are to be used in conjuction with and take precedance over official Magic: The Gathering Multiplayer rules.

This page is a work-in-progress! Please check the News section below for updates.

Game Type Variants

Plane Sight (PS)

Basic

  1. This game type variant is for two or more players
  2. If more than one player would like to muligan first all agree to do so and then must redraw their hands in the same fashion as their starting hand.

Deck Construction

  1. A PS deck consists of at least 100 cards

Zones

  1. The Library zone consists of two piles: Land, Other
  2. The Library, Graveyard, and Exile zones are shared among all players

Starting the Game

  1. A single deck is shared amongst all players
  2. Each player takes turns choosing one card from either the Land or Other pile until said player is at their maximum hand size

Play

  1. On the active players draw step they may choose to draw one card from the top of the Library zone (choosing from either the Land or Other piles)

Optional

  1. During the active players draw step they may draw one card from the top of the Graveyard zone instead of from the Library zone
    1. While this rule is in effect any card sent to the Graveyard zone must be put on the bottom of the pile

Analysis

This game type variant allows a player to take a card they might not necessarily be able to use but they do not want an opponent taking. It also all but eliminates the concept of milling because milling another player also mills yourself. Add the optional Graveyard zone rule and milling becomes even less likely.

Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD)

Basic

  1. This game type variant is for two or more players

Deck Construction

  1. A MAD deck consists of at least 100 cards
  2. A single deck is shared among all players
    1. The Library and Graveyard zones are shared among all players
